On this day, our Indian families, apply a small amount of turmeric or sandalwood to Saraswati Devi and from that mixture only they apply it to all books they have in their houses, mainly the books of children which are used for studying purpose.
Somebody call it as a myth, but it is followed in every Indian family, and this trend is from past long time scientifically turmeric and sandalwood are very good our health, as it is applied to all our books while studying it creates a great ambiance and keeps children to stay focused. I personally experienced this in my house and in my friend's houses also.
Basant Panchami is not only celebrated in their houses but in all schools, colleges, universities, offices, etc. Mostly, this day there is no holiday everyone has to go to their workplaces and all of then worship with a song Saraswati Vandana.
People wear yellow dresses and prepare special sweet dishes for Saraswati Devi and that dishes are distributed to all nearby relatives, this type of sharing is very common in India. The dishes which are made are first kept in front of the goddess and then it is distributed. The dishes made for gods are called as Prashadam, Prashad, etc.
